,Species at Risk?
Into The arrival of mirrorless cameras seemed destined to sweep away the segment of premium compact , but apparently it did not happen. The Canon G-series is, in fact, more prosperous than ever, last fall the Japanese manufacturer has launched the beautiful Canon PowerShot G15, and now, after a year low, came back with its successor, the Canon PowerShot G16 .
If Into the G15 had been a net leap forward towards the previous model, revolutionizing both the optics and the sensor and overall design, this new G16 immediately seemed more like a refinement of the model of 2012, with some slight aesthetic overhaul and the addition of some of the ancillary features that were absent in the parse G15 .
Into the improvements are therefore sufficient to justify the purchase of a new model or upgrade from the previous one? To find out, we asked to direct comparison the two cameras.
Design and construction
Into The Canon G have always been built with exceptional care, which leaves little room for objectively make improvements from year to year. In fact, from this point of view, the Canon PowerShot G15 and G16 are substantially identical . Both are very solid, employing high-quality materials and offer a wonderful feeling to the handle. Obviously, one of the hallmarks of this series there are also some weight and dimensions do not own pocket.
Into Even at the level of design and layout of the controls , the two instruments are very similar, but this time you may notice a few differences. The first and most significant is the shift of programmable key (first on the left side of the body, below the flash), now positioned on the grip of the thumb, next to the button dedicated to video footage. This new positioning is slightly uncomfortable and makes the right side of the camera certainly more crowded, but probably it is an inevitable choice: in his old position, in fact, we now find the ‘ antenna Wi-Fi , which is perhaps the biggest news of the Canon PowerShot G16 .Into The rest of the commands is mostly identical between the two cameras, with some minor reallocation of certain features on the back of G16 , but nothing fundamental. Even menu have the same operability and are now traditional with regard to this manufacturer.
Into High up on the camera body is the usual optical viewfinder that in PowerShot G16 as in G15 , it is really small and is to the limits of the futility, ending only to increase the footprint of the machine. Perhaps, it is time to abandon it, or even better to replace it with an electronic viewfinder, an interesting feature that we begin to find in some compact from other manufacturers. Into In terms of design and build quality , however, the two substantially PowerShot get a draw.G16 Rating: 8.5
G15 Rating: 8.5
features and usability
In our test Into the Canon PowerShot G15 , was traced as this was a camera that has all the features you love from experienced photographers (manual controls, double dial, slide for external flash, etc..) and none of the technological characteristics accessory that more and more often we find in modern cameras (Wi-Fi, extended video mode, touch screen). Well, at least two of these gaps were filled with Canon PowerShot G16 : the inclusion of the antenna Wi-Fi allows, in fact, to communicate with all devices “smart”, while the lack of video mode G15 (limited to 24fps in Full HD resolution) has been greatly expanded and now reaches the standard of 1080p at 60fps. In qualitative terms, the videos will definitely benefit, making it more pleasant (both in terms of detail both fluidity) than those captured by the old model.

Canon declares a change of gear similar also in regard to the performance of autofocus (“faster by 50%”), but from this point of view, the gap between the two cameras appears less evident : G15 , under good light, is really fast, so as to make almost imperceptible or disconnection from PowerShot G16 . In low light conditions, however, both cameras prove far less safe and snappy as indeed is always the case.

G15 Rating: 8
Image Quality
Into In terms of purely photographic equipment, the heart of G15 and that of G16 is virtually identical, with the same CMOS sensor 1 / 1.7 “diagonal and 12-megapixel for a resolution, and the same objective 28-140 mm equivalent with maximum aperture of f/1.8-2.8. It is not surprising, therefore, that even the qualitative performance of the two cameras are extremely close.
IntoInto Canon states that the introduction of a new image processor gives PowerShot G16 an advantage in terms of noise suppression digital at high ISO, but when practice, this difference is negligible. The value of ISO 1600, G16 seems to get a little less detail smeared and sharper, but it is, in fact, a choice dependent on processing: digital noise generated by the sensor is in fact the same as that seen in the images of G15 .
Into This means that both cameras get a good performance at ISO values ??base and perfectly usable (especially in social networking) up to 800 ISO. This is true both in terms of digital noise and other core values: engraving detail, color fidelity, manage conflicts and artifact suppression are all fields in which G15 and G16 behave in an excellent manner, relative to the small size of their sensor and their price range.

Verdict
Into What, then, are the reasons to prefer the Canon PowerShot G16 than the old model? The most important, in our opinion, is undoubtedly related to the greater burst speed and shutter operations in general, which makes the new version much more responsive in the face of G15 a little ‘sleepy. Lovers of sharing on social networks, then, will also appreciate the addition of the antenna Wi-Fi , probably.
Into A basic level of photo (quality control, AF speed, optical quality and image), new and old model, however, are much closer. This is no doubt a tribute to the old model, which a year after its release is still a great choice for passionate photographers looking for a pocket instrument quality. IntoInto Considering that the Canon PowerShot G15 is still available on the market again at heavily discounted prices (below 400 euro), it is impossible to deny the value of this offer, we invite everyone to consider . For photographers who already own it and are considering the possibility to upgrade to the Canon PowerShot G16 , however, recommend that you wait : next year will probably bring much more substantial news in the G-series
Into the other hand, though, if the G15 you were unhappy because of the burst speed , quality of the video or the lack of connectivity Wi-Fi, then the Canon PowerShot G16 is definitely a purchase motivated, despite an official price of about 200 euro higher than the old model.
