EXPRESS TEST – What is this compact and connected model to share his photos on Facebook or Instagram

? “Bloody” original. On the occasion of the world’s largest exhibition of new technology, CES is held every year in Las Vegas, Canon was surprised with the announcement on January 7 , a particularly original model. The PowerShot N is one of the smallest compact digital cameras in the market but its uniqueness lies in its size: almost square, it is intended for all mobile users who wish to publish their photos and instantly share on Facebook or Instagram. Small but practical You might think, seeing its size, the PowerShot N is not very convenient to take in hand:. no apparent trigger button, a few tiny buttons on the side and a full touch screen. But after a few minutes of use, we realize that different choices of ergonomics, dedicated to ultra-mobile users who do not want to carry an impressive case, prove charges. You can easily drag the PowerShot N in his pocket, in a bag or purse. However, the size of the buttons is not suited to large hands.

All poses Another feature of the PowerShot N:. ability to take pictures in almost all conditions, all poses, all angles. A feat made possible by two features: the two trigger buttons, located directly on the top and bottom of the silver ring of the sensor (see photo below). Coupled with its swivel screen, it offers the user the possibility to rotate the camera in any direction without worrying about where is the shutter button pictures.

Random filters, better Instagram ? The social network personalization and photo sharing became famous long before its acquisition by Facebook, proposing to apply filters to their images in square format. Canon uses the same principle by adding a feature: automatic and random creation of six custom filters. Thus, no need for systematic scanning of 56 filters available in the menus of the camera, the PowerShot N is (almost) to your site. And use, each set of six modified pictures contains at least one good shot, there is no more to share.

sharing, can do better. Canon has equipped the new model with WiFi, but not publish or send his photos directly from the PowerShot N. Must initially connect a smartphone via iPhone or Android app to the device. In a second step, the application (free) allows you to view or save the phone memory the series of photos taken with the N. Finally, the user must connect to different sharing networks to publish his photographs, as if the photo was taken with his smartphone. Finally, the sharing is done in several stages when it could simply connect the camera directly to WiFi to facilitate posting on Facebook, Twitter and other Instagram.

Verdict: Canon innovates and this case is a real good surprise: its ultra-compact size will appeal to amateur photographers eager mobility and sharing. But lack of simplicity this aspect and its price (299 euros) can be a barrier to purchase. Other models of the same type should open soon (see for example the Samsung Galaxy Camera) and pulling equipment prices down.
