Into The camera design is so boring , admittedly. All SLRs are similar to each other. All compact resemble each other. The shutter release button is always there, at the top right, with lots of greetings for the poor lefties. The maximum stress that allow the designer is to use fluorescent colors, as in the case of Mark Newson and Pentax K-01.
Fortunately Into a breath of fresh air comes with the Canon Powershot N , an original compact that impresses at first glance an obvious missing piece: there is the shutter release button . Of course there is, just that the engineers have given the shape of the ring coaxial lens . Immediately adjacent to the ring has been assigned the zoom control. Into By partnering with Canon Italy I had the opportunity to try this for a long time trying to change things, at least in terms of design.Into
DESIGN AND ERGONOMICS
Into The Canon Powershot N features some design choices apparently inherited from the world of telephony. In fact uses MicroSD memory cards : This is an obvious choice to limit the size, but who in the house many standard SD cards will not be able to use them with this camera. In addition the battery can be recharged only when it is installed inside the camera . So if you buy a second battery it can not be left at home in charge, unless you buy a dedicated charger optional. The compactness in each case is remarkable: in practice is equal to the size of the rear display. Display that you see really well and that is also practical use tactile, thanks to the fact that changes orientation depending on the position of the camera: easy shooting then from below or from above by reversing the camera. Despite the limited space available to the Canon has managed to enter inside the body one stabilized zoom equivalent to 28-224mm , which is an impressive 8x. Too bad that the ‘ opening is not particularly high, at af/3.0-5.9 , that pushes the electronics to raise the sensitivity, with the consequent loss of fine detail. Also for reasons of compactness there is no xenon flash, replaced by a LED flash : yet another choice that recalls the world of telephony. There remain large enough the two rings coaxial lens through which control the zoom and shooting. The first five minutes of use, however, are terrible . You should check where are the fingers to see if it is touching the zoom ring or the shooting. Once you get used else flows smoothly, except for the buttons on the right side: they are small and awkward to reach . Personally I eliminate it altogether, bringing the corresponding commands, such as to review the images, tactile interface directly. Personally eliminate it also features Wi-Fi, which honestly I find uninteresting . In fact, I would expect to find the same functions that I had already experienced on the Canon EOS 6D, ie in particular the possibility of using a smartphone as a viewfinder and remote control remote. Unfortunately through the app Canon CameraWindow you can only geotag or download the pictures you have taken. Useful so only for the immediate sharing images on social networks. Finally, a purely aesthetic detail that I did not like is the attack for the wrist strap, this is on the right side than on the left: they are showy and annoying, especially when trying to press the aforementioned microscopic buttons on the right side . Probably the designers wanted to have a eye for left-handed , which will use the attack on the left. Perhaps they also thought about the possibility of using a classic shoulder bag that would look like using the Canon Powershot N to a classic TLR, usually used around his neck to belly height. But Canon accessories i n the catalog there is a strap like this: you have to go searching through the universal products. So in my opinion a classic through opening in the body would be more functional and aesthetically pleasing.
IntoIMPRESSIONS OF USE
Into As mentioned above, and once you’re comfortable with the rings the zoom and the shutter is easy and fun to use the Canon Powershot N. Being able to use these rings on both the top and bottom allows you to shoot from any angle with the maximum comfort. The monitor lets then also activate shooting with the touch: with all these possibilities does not feel the lack of the old shutter button. The focus and exposure metering works very well, aided by the ability to choose the point of always reading through the touch interface. Also applies the white balance, although it may mislead the display, very saturated and with a dominant hot.
IntoIMAGE QUALITY
Into The Canon Powershot N mounts inside a classic CMOS sensor 1/2.3 “(6.17 x 4:55 mm) and 12 Megapixels, so do not expect a very high quality. In fact, the minimum sensitivity we have an excellent performance, which is still acceptable up to 400 ISO. Already, however, the reduction from 800 ISO noise starts to take away the fine detail. Incredibly, the color noise does not even appear at the maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400, but obviously the effect of “kneading” becomes more than obvious. No problem if we want to use the photos captured on social networks, but if our goal is to print is much better to try to stay within the ISO 400 when possible.
Intoask WHAT MORE
Into the Canon Powershot N I ask you something rather less. Would remove the double attack for the wrist strap. Would remove the small buttons on the right side. Would remove the Wi-Fi. Ridurrei well as the excursion of the focal length. So the Canon Powershot N would be more essential and maybe even cheaper, becoming even more attractive for those wishing to try a camera from user experience really innovative.
IntoCONCLUSIONS
Into The Canon Powershot N is a camera in the original design, which attracts the curiosity of friends when you use it. Moreover, the experience of using a camera with two coaxial rings objective instead of the traditional shutter button and zoom control is definitely fun and encourages creative use. You can then use directly a number of effects such as miniature or toy camera, reminiscent of the results of certain smartphone apps like Instagram . So if you’re tired of the same compact and want something decidedly different, then the Canon Powershot N could be for you.
Into To conclude here is really summed up what I liked and what is not:Likes:
Into –
innovative design – creative possibilities provided by the interface
– image quality at low sensitivity
not like:
Into – double-ended wrist strap ugly and not very useful
– small and uncomfortable buttons on the right side
– Built-in Wi-Fi that allows remote control
– noise reduction already evident in ISO 800
Into finally I want to thank Mary Tricarico and Simon Rosati for posing in test shots.
