Taimyr Peninsula: reindeer in the water in one of the most remote regions of Russia

As a partner in preservation imaging WWF material, Canon has helped fund the mission of the expedition for determining, collecting the genetic material necessary if there are populations of walrus and polar bears in the Laptev Sea genetically different, or if the animals living in the Laptev Sea are related to one or more neighboring populations. The answer to this question is necessary to develop effective systems for monitoring the status of the two species and to determine the operations to be undertaken to protect.

Alexey Ebel was sponsored by Canon to join the expedition and take pictures with camera and lenses Canon equipment, the EOS 6D and the PowerShot D20.

Ebel gave the following advice to other photographers interested in preserving, to help them overcome the challenge of taking pictures of the flora and fauna in extreme environments and winter weather conditions:

  1. Keep equipment dry
Work in wet and cold conditions of the Arctic requires special equipment. That is why I chose the career goals and L series cameras Canon EOS. They are ideally suited to this type of environment because of their seal that helps protect against dust and moisture. This is simply indispensable in such places to be sure to take pictures in different conditions, without having to worry about not being able to take the picture when the light is good.

  2. Making the most of the different modes of image stabilization
There is no doubt that the image of modern objectives stabilizers allow you to capture sharp images even when photo taking is done without a tripod. Remember that you can choose from different modes of image stabilization. When shipping Canon WWF in a small boat in low light conditions, the image stabilizer allowed me to continue to take pictures. Mode 1 is best suited for general conditions (eg, photo taken from the boat), but the mode 2 is more suitable for panoramic views or when following a subject, like a polar bear, for example.

  3. When taking pets photo, sharpness control the depth of field
When I take a picture with a telephoto lens, the sharpness of the image is of of paramount importance. This is sometimes very difficult to achieve, especially for images with low contrast subjects, or on a sunny day. However, this picture perfectly illustrates how the Canon EOS 5D Mark III allows you to see all the details and make any necessary adjustments. Remember that as your focal point, the depth of field extends the full depth of the field of third front focal point and 2/3 behind it.

  4. When taking pets photo, use zoom lenses
If you take pictures of animals in nature, the ability to move is limited. In such situations, it is very important to use telephoto lens for capturing animals in their natural habitat. A zoom lens allows you to change the picture frame without disturbing the animals and capture subjects effectively with different framing options.

  5. Use different objectives to create a more interesting photojournalism
Nature photography is not just simple pictures of animals, but also their environment. When I try to tell the story of an animal and its habitat, I find it more interesting to use zoom lenses that allow me to capture a variety of images (from wide angle to telephoto) without having to keep changing lenses. This is especially important during an expedition where it is difficult to carry a lot of goals.

  6. Beware of wild animals in the polar tundra tundra
has very little vegetation, which is why so few large animals live. But if you persevere, you might stumble upon a very interesting local wildlife! Be careful however, some animals do not fear anything tundra humans and may perceive you as a prey to attack.

  7. Protect your eyes!
The polar sun is low on the horizon and it often shines right in your eyes. Even if it poses no danger to your equipment, it may damage your eyes, especially when you shoot a subject against backlight. Do not look through the viewfinder, but use the Live View. Due to the constant movement of the sun and the changing conditions, a camera can be in a good position at time t and end up in a bad position in the next moment, which can damage your eyes if you use the viewfinder.

  8. Be patient
Taking pictures of animals may require long waiting patiently for the few fleeting moments. Be patient, get ready and anticipate the magic moment, but also take intermediate pictures because things can happen quickly. And of course, do not forget to carry an extra memory card!

  9. Do not fall asleep during important pictures
In summer it emerged 24h/24 in the Arctic Circle. Falling asleep can be a difficult task. Course you choose when you want to sleep, but I recommend you do when the weather is bad or when other conditions prevent you from taking interesting photos. Apart from this, stay alert and keep a photographic equipment nearby. This image was taken when the reindeer suddenly started to cross the river current.

  10. Do not forget gloves for the cold, which does not prevent the shooting
It’s always cold in the Arctic Circle, even in July. If you intend to take a lot of photos, you’ll need gloves! This can complicate slightly the installation of the camera, but the control buttons based on the 5D Mark III (which I used) are relatively sensitive and easy to use even with gloves. Cold can also affect the life of the battery. Therefore, try to keep all your spare batteries warm in inside pockets or near the body.
